Three days, only a handful of signings, almost all of which
took place on Friday.
Buccaneers sign DT
Amobi Okoye
The Buccaneers signed defensive tackle Amobi Okoye to a
one-year, $2 million dollar deal on Saturday.
The Bucs spent two-high draft picks on a pair of defensive
tackles not that long ago, but both Gerald McCoy and Brian Price has struggled
to stay healthy. Okoye provided a strong interior pass rush with the
Bears a
year ago and could provide a similar spark to this team. I don’t think he’ll be
more than a depth tackle going into the year, but still has a chance to work
himself into the starting lineup if McCoy or Price gets hurt again.
Rams sign DE William
Hayes
The Rams signed defensive end Williams Hayes to a one-year
contract worth $1 million dollars on Friday.
I really like this signing. Hayes is a high effort player
who’s familiar with the defensive scheme that Jeff Fisher likes to use and is a
more solid run defender. He’ll provide competition for former first round pick
Robert Quinn and could start over Quinn, allowing Quinn to be a situational
pass rusher.
Raiders sign DE Dave
Tollefson
The Raiders signed defensive end Dave Tollefson to a
two-year deal worth a maximum of $3 million dollars on Friday.
I love Tollefson’s effort as a pass rusher, but I don’t think
he’s going to be the answer to the Raider’s pass rushing problems. He should be
a good depth player, but the Raiders still need to a get an elite pass rusher.
Bengals sign OG Jacob
Bell
The Bengals signed offensive guard Jacob Bell to a one-year
deal on Friday.
The Bengals continue trying to address their offensive line
woes with a multitude of free agent signings. While I don’t think Bell is going
to beat anybody out for a job any time soon, he should be a solid depth player.
I like the signing on the whole.
Seahawks re-sign CB
Roy Lewis, sign OG Deuce Lutui, LB Barrett Ruud
The Seahawks re-signed cornerback Roy Lewis and signed
offensive guard Deuce Lutui and linebacker Barrett Ruud on Friday. All were
signed to one-year deals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
I like how the Seahawks have addressed some of their issues
in free agency. Lewis is familiar with the system and can play well as a nickel
and dime corner.
I like Deuce Lutui as a guard, but he’s had a hard time controlling
his weight. Back with his college coach, I think he’ll return to being a solid
guard who can hold down the spot where Robert Gallery played last year.
Ruud was a dominant linebacker with the Bucs, but injuries
kept him from being an impact player. He should be at least a decent option to
help replace David Hawthorne, but he needs to stay healthy.
49ers re-sign WR
Brett Swain
The 49ers re-signed wide receiver Brett Swain to an
undisclosed contract on Friday.
I’m ok with this signing. Swain is familiar with the
offensive system and is a good special teamer. He should provide good depth.
