2012 Team Review: Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs: Final Record: 2-14

What Went Right: Jamaal Charles, Justin Houston and Tamba Hali

Charles’ year has been lost (rightfully so) in the comeback of Adrian Peterson. But returning from a similar injury, Charles racked up his highest single season rushing total in his young career. All while being the main option on and having literally no passing offense to speak of. Additionally, he still averaged over five yards per carry for the season, showing that the knee injury hasn’t robbed him of his game breaking speed.

Goodell's Mounting Blunders

To all the Green Bay Packers fans, please address all your death threats, hate mail and other complaints, to Roger Goodell. HE’s the one who screwed you. Not the officials who are doing the best they can in an impossible situation. Not to the Seahawks who are going to take a win regardless of who dubious the circumstance. Not even to the owners, though they do need a solid kick in the butt to get going.

While Goodell does work for the owners, his job to protect the interests of the league. That’s why he was so highly praised for his player conduct policy, because he was protecting the interests of the league regardless of the teams which are hurt by it. But between the lockout of the player’s last year that almost cost a season and the current joke that is the officiating as a result of another lockout, how can anyone even remotely come close to saying that Roger Goodell is not the worst commissioner in the league’s history?

2012 NFL Predictions

While I normally don’t do prediction articles like his cause they’re basically just guesses, one of my loyal readers requested it. So, here we go. Let’s see who will make the playoffs, who could make a run at the playoffs and of course, who will win the Super Bowl.

AFC Division Winners: NE, BAL, HOU, OAK

AFC Wild Card: CIN, TEN

Some Hall of Fame Predictions

Alright, Saturday the Pro Football Hall of Fame welcomed six new members. I’ve already covered these players and their accomplishments, so I think perhaps a few predictions are in order. This is going to be pretty simple, I’m going to look at the teams that the recent inductees predominantly played for and as well as their colleges and predict who would be the next Hall of Famer elected from those places. I don’t have to pick someone to make it clear. So, let’s get started with the Pro teams first.

Thoughts on the 2012 Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony.

Well, it’s been a while hasn’t it. There’s a lot of stuff to talk about, but we’ll get to those items when the time is right. There’s an enshrinement ceremony to talk about and some legends that deserve this blog’s recognition.

Thoughts on the Draft.

Well, the draft’s done now and it’s time to see who did a good job and how didn’t.

Best Draft

The Cincinnati Bengals – The Bengals have been doing a lot of moving in the draft in recent years and found themselves some quality players at need positions. Every pick has a place and each one should find themselves a spot on the roster. Grabbing Dre Kirkpatrick and Shaun Prater gives the Bengals some young corners to work into the lineup next year. Devon Still and Brandon Thompson give them more depth along the defensive line who should work their ways into the lineup. Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones give the Bengals some good options at receiver and hopefully some playmakers to pair with AJ Green. Kevin Zeitler should slide into one of the guard spot and start immediately. Orson Charles, George Ilkoa and Dan Herron will all be solid special teamers and can find spots to play in sub packages. Every single pick can help this team and they took no major risks in taking who they took, which is the textbook definition of a solid draft.

Thoughts from the First Round

Alright, the first round of the draft is in the books. Let’s have a quick look at a few of the notable picks. I’ll be sure not to name the same pick to multiple categories, even if it deserves it.

BEST PICK

David DeCastro to Pittsburgh – What can I say? This was just a great selection, every way you look at it. DeCastro is widely touted (and deservedly so) as the best guard prospect since Steve Hutchinson. If he can be that kind of player, lined up next to Maurkice Pouncey, then the Steelers interior line is set for the next decade. I just really love this pick.

Mock Draft, 5.0

 1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

This is a done deal, Ryan Grigson said so.

Previous Pick: Andrew Luck

2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III – QB  - Baylor

If reports are to be believed, the Redskins are already teaching him the playbook. I think that, whether true or not, should say enough about this pick. Granted, it’s been a while since any actually questioned whether or not he would be the pick.

Previous Pick: Robert Griffin III

Free Agency, Days 31-35

After a few days off, I’m back and with a ton of moves to cover.

Giants acquire LB Keith Rivers from Bengals

The Giants acquired linebacker Keith Rivers from the Bengals for a 5th round draft pick on Thursday.

I like this moves from both sides. I like Rivers and think that he is a better linebacker than most people give him credit for. However he has had injury issues in his career and those could dog him in New York. However, if he stays healthy, he’s a very good weakside linebacker and can definitely help the Giants linebacker problems.

Free Agency, Day 30

The Bengals continue making moves and making me question if Mike Brown has been replaced by a clone.

Bears extend LB Lance Briggs

The Bears signed linebacker Lance Briggs to a one-year contract extension which keeps him in Chicago through the 2014 season. The deal pays $17.5 million over the next three years, $5 million of which is guaranteed.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Free Agency, Day 29

Well, I certainly didn’t see the biggest news of yesterday coming. Let’s go through it a bit.

Panthers extend WR Steve Smith

The Panthers signed wide receiver Steve Smith to a three-year contract extension with a team option for a fourth year. Financial terms were not disclosed but the deal could have as much as $18 million dollars guaranteed.

I’ve always believed in hang on to your own, but I really wasn’t expecting this to happen. I kind of had the feeling that the Panthers would let Smith’s contract run out and try to bring in younger receivers to mature with quarterback Cam Newton, but that being said, I like this move a great deal. Smith can still be a big play

Free agency, Day 28

Let’s see what’s happening in the NFL with the draft quickly approaching.

Seahawks re-sign CB Marcus Trufant

The Seahawks re-signed cornerback Marcus Trufant to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

I love this signing. Trufant has been one of the best corners to ever play in Seattle and I always thought I was a shame that he might not finish his career there. So I was glad to see that he re-signed with the Seahawks. It

Free Agency, Days 25-27

Three days, only a handful of signings, almost all of which took place on Friday.

Buccaneers sign DT Amobi Okoye

The Buccaneers signed defensive tackle Amobi Okoye to a one-year, $2 million dollar deal on Saturday.

The Bucs spent two-high draft picks on a pair of defensive tackles not that long ago, but both Gerald McCoy and Brian Price has struggled to stay healthy. Okoye provided a strong interior pass rush with the

Free agency, Days 23-24

Two major signings in two days. Let’s dive right in.

Ravens extend CB Lardarius Webb

The Ravens signed cornerback Lardarius Webb to a six-year contract extension worth $50 million dollars with $10 million of it guaranteed on Thursday.

Ozzie Newsome is always ahead of the curve it seems like. He always finds good players in the draft, allows them to develop and when they do, will give them a big contract commiserate with their skill level. That’s this signing in a nutshell. Webb had a great year and the Ravens have faith that he’ll continue to excel for years to come. I love this move.

Mock Draft 4.0

With free agency two weeks old and almost all the major signings made, there will likely only be intermittent changes from here on out. But let’s see what the second week of free agency did to the draft outlook.

1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

*yawn*

Previous Pick: Andrew Luck

Free Agency, Day 22

Oddly enough, yesterday may have changed the face of the draft, or at least my mock draft.

Saints sign LB David Hawthorne

The Saints signed linebacker David Hawthorne to a five-year deal.

This is arguably one of the best and most perplexing signings of this offseason. One the one hand, Hawthorne was the third best middle linebacker (and overall linebacker) available in free agency, so signing him would be a good deal for any team. However, I just have no idea what they plan to do with him.

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Free Agency, Day 21

Sadly the biggest news in the NFL yesterday was that Torry Holt retired as a Ram. For those not in the know, Holt hasn’t played since 2009, his retirement was merely formality. But a few moves were made, so let’s look at what they were.

Rams re-sign QB Tom Brandstater, sign LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar

The Rams re-signed third quarterback Tom Brandstater to an undisclosed deal and signed linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar to a two-year contract worth a maximum of $5 million dollars if he hits all of his incentives.

The Brandstater signing is sensible, though won’t make an impact. He’s just a developmental player who will likely never see the field.

Free Agency, Days17-20

After a few days off, let’s catch up with the signings from the past four days.

Panthers acquire OT Bruce Campbell for RB Mike Goodson

The Panthers traded running back Mike Goodson for offensive tackle Bruce Campbell on Friday.

I’m not willing to say there was a winner in this trade, but I can’t say there was a loser either. The Raiders definitely needed a backup running back to cover for when Darren McFadden either needs a blow or gets

Offseason Winners and Loser through Two weeks

After two weeks of free agency, it’s safe to say that there is little other than a big trade that would adjust the fortunes of these teams. So why not look at the winners and losers of the offseason to this point? This will include trades as well as free agent signings as well as re-signings and contract extensions. So, without further ado, here we go.

WINNERS

Philadelphia Eagles – I think it goes without saying that the Eagles have probably had the best offseason

Free Agency, Day Sixteen

I’m not sure there’s a worse crawl then the waning days of free agency. When there are still signings and rumors a plenty, but both move at a snail’s pace.

49ers sign RB Brandon Jacobs

The 49ers signed running back Brandon Jacobs to a one-year contract.

I can’t say I dislike the signing, though it doesn’t excite me at all. The 49ers seem to be adding a power back so that when they feel the need to limit Frank Gore’s carries in short yardage situations, they have a better option than the smaller Kendall Hunter. Make no mistake, Hunter will probably see more carries than Jacobs because of his potential to make big plays, but Jacobs will probably score more touchdowns because of when he will get the ball. It’s a nice approach, so long as they don’t ruin Frank Gore’s rhythm in the process.

Mock Draft 3.0

With free agency two weeks old and almost all the major signings made, there will likely only be intermittent changes from here on out. But let’s see what the second week of free agency did to the draft outlook.

1.       Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

Nothing will be changing this signing unless the Colts actually sign a different player before the draft.

Previous Pick: Andrew Luck

2.       Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III – QB  - Baylor

Basically the same as above. The Redskins will only change this pick if the Colts take RGIII.

Previous Pick: Robert Griffin III

Free Agency, Day Fifteen

Another day, another three or four signings to comment on.

Lions re-sign RB Kevin Smith

The Lions re-signed running back Kevin Smith to a one-year deal.

I love this move. It shows faith in Smith to be an effective runner when called upon and gives the Lions another option while Mikel Leshoure and Jahvid Best recover from their respective injuries. I like the way

Free agency, Day Fourteen

Well, two weeks of free agency have passed. And now were down to a few token signings a day. All the major news has been made and short of an unexpected trade, I doubt there will be a headlines being made until the draft.

Rams re-sign FB Brit Miller, sign WR Steve Smith, TE Matthew Mulligan

The Rams re-signed fullback Brit Miller to an undisclosed contract. They also signed wide receiver Steve Smith to a one-year deal and tight end Matthew Mulligan to a two-year deal.

Monday, March 26, 2012

Free Agency, Days Twelve and Thirteen

Why is it the weekends always seem to be extra slow when it comes to free agent signings? Oh well, here’s your weekend report.

Saints sign LB Curtis Lofton

The Saints signed linebacker Curtis Lofton to a five-year deal.

This is the big foot I’ve been waiting to fall for most of the off-season. While there are still a number of good players still waiting to find jobs elsewhere, I didn’t think there were any as good as Lofton. After the Gregg Williams scandal and the potential that middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma will be suspended arose, this move

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Free Agency, Day Eleven

Eleven days of signings and things just keep on going.

Packers sign OC Jeff Saturday, DT Daniel Muir

The Packers signed offensive center Jeff Saturday and defensive tackle Daniel Muir to undisclosed deals.

These were interesting, though sensible moves by the Packers. They needed help along the defensive line so grabbing a player like Muir made sense, though how much help he’ll be is yet to be seen. The Saturday signing though is going to be interesting to watch. Saturday has played his entire career in one offense and how able he’ll be to adjust to the Mike McCarthy offense is going to be key to whether or not this move works out.

Friday, March 23, 2012

Free Agency, Day Ten

With about ten days of the free agency period behind us, we should be settled in with the majority of signings being finalized. But before we get to that, let’s look at today’s signings.

Bears sign RB Michael Bush

The Bears signed running back Michael Bush to a four-year deal worth $14 million dollars including $7 million in guarantees.

I’m hesitant to say this was a great move, but I like it in principle. The Bears are not sure that they’ll be able to work out a contract with Matt Forte long-term so they grabbed one of the best available running backs as insurance. Additionally, Bush can be worked into a rotation with Forte to help keep both players fresh. The question is whether or not they can trust Bush to be a full-time starter should Forte walk following next season. If not, then this move could blow up in their face.

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Free Agency, Day Nine

Another day, another dozen or so signings.

QB Tim Tebow acquired by Jets

The Jets acquired quarterback Tim Tebow and a seventh round pick from the Broncos in exchange for a fourth-round pick and sixth round pick.

I don’t understand why the Jets would make this move other than to make a headline. The Jets have already given Mark Sanchez a contract extension and he is expected to be their starting quarterback for the next two years. I guess they may work him in in packages, but it hardly seems like that’s worth the trade. For the Broncos, they got what they could for him. Not much else to say other than that.

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Free agency, Day Eight

Well, the biggest shoe has finally fallen. Now let’s see what happens as a reaction to that. Oh, and there were also some other signings today.

Broncos sign QB Peyton Manning

The Broncos signed quarterback Peyton Manning to a five-year, $96 million dollar contract.

So, the biggest free agency shoe fell. The Broncos have committed to hoping for a Super Bowl title in the next few years while their future is going to be a great big question mark. Don’t get me wrong, Manning gives this team a much better chance to go to the Super Bowl in the next three years than they would have

Mock Draft 2.0

Now that we have a full week of free agency pass us and some time to breathe and examine what has happened, here’s my updated Mock draft.

1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

Nothing has been done to make this pick change.

Previous Pick: Andrew Luck

2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III – QB  - Baylor

The Redskins are trying to replace their lost draft picks via free agency, getting weapons for RGIII. The only reason this pick changes is if the Colts decide they like RGIII better.

Previous Pick: Robert Griffin III

Free Agency, Days Six and Seven

A day with less than ten signings? In that case I’ll do two days. I will also note that any analysis I have on the Peyton Manning signing will occur after he signs on the dotted line. Until then, nothing is set in stone.

Seahawks sign QB Matt Flynn

The Seahawks signed quarterback Matt Flynn to a three-year deal worth up to $26 million dollars, $10 million of which is guaranteed.

Well, this was a somewhat surprising. I know that the feeling around Seattle is that the Seahawks needed to get themselves a franchise quarterback, but I thought the Seahawks didn’t need to press to get one.  This kind of feels like a move made out of pressure, not necessity. I also thought that Matt Flynn would only be an effective starter in the Joe Philbin or Mike McCarthy offenses. I question how effective he will be in the Pete Carroll offense.

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Free agency, Day Five

After the flurry of the first few days of free agency, the signings should settle into a nice steady pace. There are still some big signings to be had.

Patriots sign DE Trevor Scott, WRs Anthony Gonzalez and Brandon Lloyd

The Patriots sign defensive end Trevor Scott to a one-year deal. He is expected to pay as an outside linebacker with the Patriots. The Pats also signed wide receivers Anthony Gonzalez and Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd’s contract is for three-years and worth $12 million dollars.

The Patriots are finally addressing some of their key issues. I like Scott as a pass rusher, and his thinner frame would help him transition to the 3-4 outside linebacker spot fairly well. Gonzalez has talent when he can stay healthy, but it’s doubtful the Patriots are counting on him to be a star. Lloyd is the big catch and his ability to make big plays deep (at least over the last two years) would greatly help the Patriots passing game open up more and free up more space for the running game. I like all of these signings.

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Free Agency, Day Four

Another day, another bunch of signings in the NFL.

Rams sign OC Scott Wells

The Rams signed offensive center Scott Wells.

This was a great move by the Rams. They found themselves on of the best centers in the league and puts a piece in place as the foundation of that Rams offensive line. He can build a good rapport with Sam Bradford and help the rest of that offensive line solidify. They still need a lot of help, but Wells is a solid foundation.

Friday, March 16, 2012

Free Agency, Day Three

71 signings and trades are in the books. Expect at least that many in the next week.

Bills sign DE/OLB Mario Williams

The Bills signed defensive end/outside linebacker Mario Williams to a six-year worth as much as $100 million dollars with $50 million guaranteed.

The Bills made the biggest splash in free agency by grabbing onto Mario Williams and not letting go until he was signed to a deal and looking for a home in Buffalo. While Williams has been hurt on occasion, missing the back half of the last two years with injuries, he’s remains the consummate pass rusher when he’s been healthy. He’ll pair very well with Marcell Darues and give Buffalo the pass rush it’s needed for years. The only question now becomes how do the Bills follow this up?

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Free agency, Day Two.

Day one was busy, and there’s still of lot of signing to do. Let’s get to the new deals coming out.

The Buccaneers sign CB Eric Wright, OG Carl Nicks

The Buccaneers signed cornerback Eric Wright to a five-year contract worth $37.5 million with $15.5 million guaranteed and offensive guard Carl Nicks to a five-year contract worth $47 million dollars including $31 million guaranteed on Wednesday.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

2012 Free Agency, Day One

Free agency has begun and the insanity is already going fast and fierce. There were some other signings that happened before it began so there’s a lot to cover. Let’s get into it.

The Bears acquire WR Brandon Marshall from Dolphins for two third round picks

Talk about blockbuster moves. The Bears decided that the receiving prospects in the draft weren’t all that appealing and decided to go for Jay Cutler’s favored target from Denver. They got a major steal in acquiring him for only two third-round picks. Marshall and Cutler had a great relationship when they were both in Denver and Marshall is the kind of big receiver the Bears have needed to get since they acquired Cutler from the Broncos some years ago. Now they have him and can focus on other needs.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Pre-free Agencies Signings

The Jets extend QB Mark Sanchez, re-signs DT Sione Pouha

Late on Friday night, while the Redskins and Rams were agreeing to a blockbuster trade that changes the face of the upcoming draft, the Jets announced that they signed quarterback Mark Sanchez to a three-year contract extension worth approximately 40.5 million dollars. This move came as a surprise to a lot of people, because it was thought that Sanchez would have one more year before the Jets gave up on him.

Monday, March 12, 2012

2012 Mock Draft, March 12th edition

Well, it’s time. Free agency starts soon and all of the scouting reports are in. It’s time to make the first mock draft of the season. Here we go.

1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford

No one should be surprised by this. The Colts made this decision almost as soon as the season ended and everything else has just been doing due diligence and clearing cap space.

2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III – QB  - Baylor

After everything the Redskins gave up, is there really another pick? Griffin had better be THE guy, because the Redskins gave up a ton to move up for this pick.

Sunday, March 11, 2012

The Rams - Redskins Draft Trade

It was announced last night that the Washington Redskins will trade three first round picks and a second round pick to the St. Louis Rams for the second overall pick in the 2012 draft. Presumably, the Redskins will be taking Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin the third (RGIII) with that selection. The Rams will receive the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft class as well as the Redskins second round pick in this draft and their first round picks in 2013 and 2014. The deal is awaiting league approval, which won’t be granted until the league year begins on Tuesday, March 13th.

All-in-all, the Rams had to get this deal done and the Redskins were desperate enough to do it. Add in a little pressure on the Rams from Peyton Manning becoming a free agent and some pressure on the Redskins because the Browns ratcheted up their efforts to trade for the pick and you get a done deal.

Saturday, March 10, 2012

March 7-9 Signings.

The Jaguars re-sign CB Rashean Mathis and OT Guy Whimper

The Jaguars made a very smart decision re-singing Rashean Mathis to a one-year five million dollar deal Wednesday. It’s odd; five years ago if anyone had said that Mathis would only be worth a one year deal. However, since his last big deal, Mathis has fallen off from the near All-Pro he once was. In his first four years, Mathis never missed a game and recorded twenty interceptions. In the last five years, he’s only played one full season and recorded a combined ten interceptions. He missed about half of last year to a torn ACL and he’ll be 32 at the beginning of the season. For a corner with all of these factors, five-million seems like a lot to pay. Also, the contract is structured so that most of the pay is incentive based, so they won’t necessarily be spending a lot on him.

Peyton Manning's Release

The Indianapolis Colts released Peyton Manning Wednesday. It ended a fourteen year relationship that saw almost unequaled success. Manning will be free to sign with any team after he clears the waiver wire today.

In other breaking news, the sun rose today.

All kidding about the “suddenness” of this decision aside, this still marks the beginning of the end of Manning’s career. While he’s most likely going to be playing in the NFL next year, it’s far-fetched to say he’s going to around for too much longer. Wherever he signs, it’s most likely going to be his last hurrah in the NFL.

March 6th Signings

The Falcons Sign Thomas DeCoud to a Five-Year Extension

The Falcons made a great decision in signing Thomas DeCoud to a five year, 17.5 million dollar deal with 4 million guaranteed. Decoud has been a starter for the better part of the last three years and while he hasn’t been spectacular, he’s been solid. He can be inconsistent, especially in coverage, but the truth is there aren’t a lot of great coverage safeties out there. Additionally, given the money the Falcons need to have available to pay other key members of their team (Matt Ryan, Curtis Lofton, etc.) DeCoud brings great value for what he’s being paid. He may never be a top ten Safety, but can play at that next tier level on occasion. Should he develop and jump to being a top 15 safety, then the Falcons got him at a great price. Good decision.

The Franchise Tags

The deadline to place Franchise Tags on players passed yesterday. A lot of moves were expected, while others were a surprise. So to wrap this entire thing up; let’s look at who was franchised and what it means for the teams.

Philadelphia Eagles – Desean Jackson – There’s been a fair amount of debate on how wise it was for the Eagles to make this move given Jackson’s baggage. However, I would point to the game that Jackson had against the Giants in 2010 as the primary reason you franchise him. The fact is that Jackson is a difference maker. He’s speed and elusiveness is simply insane and he gives the passing game a true deep threat. I believe that last season was just a speed bump in his career (and that while averaging over 16 yards a catch). Good decision, now sign him long term.

March 5th Signings

As franchise tags were being applied to keep some players for hitting the free agent market, a number of players were getting full out contract extensions, allowing their team to use the franchise tag in other areas, or by-pas it’s use entirely. Let’s examine some of those signings shall we?

Robert Mathis

Shortly after the Colts designated Robert Mathis as their franchise player, the two sides agreed on a contract extension for the 9 nine year defensive end. Depending on which source you look at, the contract is agreed on already or minor terms are still being worked out. Either way, Mathis will be staying in Indianapolis for at least one more season (I’d say till he retires or can’t play anymore). This deal was extremely important for the Colts; even though it seems to go against everything they’ve been doing this offseason. This gives the Colts a great pair of pass rushers for the next season (most likely next couple of seasons). While Mathis isn’t close to the players that Dwight Freeney is, the two have had comparable sack numbers over the course of their careers (Mathis: 83.5 – Freeney: 102.5). The same can be said for the number of fumble they force (39-43). Together, they form perhaps the most dangerous pass rushing combination in the league, and a good base off which to build a defense, which always helps a young quarterback win games.

Monday, March 5, 2012

The Marshawn Lynch signing

With the deadline to designate franchise players looming, the Seattle Seahawks were able to reach an agreement with their intended franchise tag recipient Marshawn Lynch on a long-term contract. Early reports are the contract is for four years, 31-Million with 18 million guaranteed. On average, this deal would pay Lynch 7.75 million a year, putting him just slightly above the money that franchised running backs Ray Rice and Matt Forte.

This was important for the Seahawks to get done. Lynch was the engine that ran the Seahawks offense, particularly over the latter half of the season. He recorded six 100+ yard games over the last nine games of the season and scored the only rushing touchdown given up by the 49ers defense all season. Everything the Seahawks want to do offensively run through the running game provided by Marshawn Lynch.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

The Ahmad Brooks signing

The 49ers signed outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks to a six-year contract extension worth 44.5 million dollars Tuesday. This will keep the core of the 49ers front seven together for the foreseeable future. Brooks registered seven sacks last year and 18 sacks over the course of his career with the 49ers (20 overall).

This signing was an excellent move by the 49ers for two reasons. One, it keeps Brooks, who is a key pass rushing contributor on the defense going forward. Two, it takes care of a need the 49ers may have developed had Ahmad Brooks left in free agency.

As stated, Brooks accounted for seven sacks last season and has been a dangerous edge rusher since 2009. On the whole, while he is a little bigger, he still has tremendous burst off the edge and has learned how to use his moves to get pressure. He’s also grown into the role as an outside linebacker after playing inside most of his college career. Going forward, he’s a strong complement to the more run savvy Parys Haralson and the rookie sensation Aldon Smith. He works well in the rotation and has starting ability which helps when there are so many options available and durability is at a premium.

By locking Brooks up, the 49ers also kept themselves from jumping into the fray of free agency. While Brooks will be getting around seven million a year, it’s a relative bargain compared to the best pass rushers that will be available in this year’s free agency crop. While Mario Williams or Cliff Avril would have been flashy additions, both would have demanded upwards of nine million a year. While both would have been an upgrade over Brooks in terms of pass-rushing, Brooks knows the system well and has had more experience setting the edge in the run game. The price they paid for him allows them enough spare cap space to work on the defensive backfield.

D'Qwell Jackson and recent signings.

A Little House Keeping

A few signing I missed do deserve a little analysis.

The Washington Redskins signed impending free agents Will Montgomery and Darrion Scott to new contracts. Without the specifics of the money, it’s difficult to evaluate the value the Redskins got but I would say that these were good signings. Neither guy was demanding obscene amounts of money, likely combining for less than 2 million a year against the cap (a guess based on the value of extended backups around the league), so it’s not like they were straining their cap space to bring them back. Both are valuable, if unspectacular, backups and they maintain a certain amount of depth that the Redskins won’t have to go out and replace. At best, Montgomery is a decent starter at guard or center and Scott is a special teamer with minimal value on the defensive line. But while both staying on the team; the Redskins can really focus on filling the holes near the front of the depth chart.

D’Qwell Jackson’s extension should be the first of many

The five-year, 42.5 million dollar deal D’Qwell Jackson signed Monday should be the first of many for the Cleveland Browns in the next couple of years. Jackson has been a great leader in the middle of the defense and has succeeded in both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses. He did miss the majority of the 2009 and 2010 seasons because of pectoral injuries, which drove down his value somewhat. He’s also 28 and at the end of this contract he’d be 33, so that also came into play. But he should remain a major piece in the middle of the Browns defense for the remainder of his career.

The Lions Cap Situation and Options they have

Probably the most interesting offseason story this year, at least in my mind, is how the Lions are going to handle their salary cap situation. While they are under the cap, unlike several other teams, they are right against the cap limit and to make it worse, as of right now, four players will be constituting almost 50% of their cap. Those players are Kyle Vanden Bosch, Matthew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh and Calvin Johnson. That’s the price you pay for having so many high picks before the new rookie wage scale (Johnson and Suh were #2 overall picks in 2007 and 2010 respectively and Stafford was the #1 overall pick in 2009). Johnson himself is going to count over $21 million against the cap if things don’t change.

Joe Flacco and where he ranks as a quarterback

Recently, Joe Flacco’s agent said the her client was deserving of “top five” pay because of the number of wins the Ravens have had with him at quarterback. Well that certainly stirred up debate among the national pundits, mostly against the notion of Flacco being worth that kind of money. While I certainly don’t think Flacco is a top five quarterback, he most certainly needs to be considered in the top ten.

The Jermichael Finley Deal.

The Packers made a wise move re-signing Jermichael Finley to a two year, 15 million dollar deal on Wednesday. Finley is the kind of player who is just too difficult to replace, even if he is inconsistent. Finley’s combination of size and speed makes him a matchup problem that is just too difficult to replace and even when he’s not the target of a play, teams must account for him, opening up opportunities for other receivers. He also has the faith of Aaron Rodgers, which is often more important than the faith of the media.

The Chiefs sign Stanford Routt

The signing of Stanford Routt by the Chiefs most likely signals the end of one of the most the under-rated cornerback tandems in NFL history. The Brandons (Carr and Flowers) have been stalwarts on the Chiefs defense for the past four years. Other then four games, oddly enough, games that Brandon Flowers missed, the two have played in every game since the 2008 season. They have combined for 135 passes defended, 21 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns, all by Flowers) and 495 tackles in that four year span.

The Rams and Leverage

As the combine is coming up quickly, there has been a lot of talk about the draft prospects and where they could end up etc. Inevitably with this, will come the discussion about Robert Griffin III and which teams may trade up to get him.

Robert Griffin III is being viewed as the second best quarterback in this year's draft, mostly because of his strong arm and impressive athleticism. Many are drawing comparisons to Cam Newton when they talk about RGIII's pro potential. While I certainly think that's more of an insult than a complement, it's gotten him a lot of press leading up to the draft.

The most interesting part about these discussions really isn’t how good RGIII could be or who would want to go get him, it’s the leverage discussion. It’s fascinating to see how each team will try to outbid the others and how they could react to each different move that other teams try to make.

Now any discussion like this has to involve St. Louis, since it has the pick everyone wants, #2 overall. Since they own the pick and can do whatever they want with it, the Rams have a ton of leverage. Or so it would seem. Should they keep it, they have their choice of elite prospects and can help any aspect of their game they would want to. However, if they stand pat and don’t trade the pick, they can only address one need. In a way, they need to trade the pick more than the teams looking at RGIII need to acquire it.

With that in mind, the Rams have a number of suitors they could consider. Teams like Seattle, Washington, Miami, Cleveland, New York and even Kansas City would have some interest in pursuing RGIII due to its own respective quarterback situation. Each one would need to seriously examine its priorities and the severity of its problems before making a move like this though. Of course, each one has a very different level of leverage as well.

Let’s just start with the teams least likely to make this move.  Kansas City may have some interest in getting a dynamic quarterback to go with a strong set of skill position players and defense. However, they’re a little too low in the draft order for St. Louis to consider them a viable trade partner, at least not unless the package was considerably better than the competitor offers. That would probably have to be in the range of three first round picks. That’s too much for a team like Kansas City to give up on a chance, especially when Matt Cassell is not a terrible quarterback.

Seattle has a bigger need at quarterback, but even less ammo to work with. It’d also have to give the farm and probably some of their young building blocks to get a chance at RGIII.

The Jets may have the weakest ammo of all, drafting in the middle of the first round, but it has had a history of making moves like this. They did it the 2009 draft when they traded with the Browns to go get Mark Sanchez. However, the regime there is in a win now mode and aren’t going to be able to wait for RGIII to develop.

Miami’s quarterback problems are well known. The Dolphins have been looking for a quarterback since Dan Marino retired over a decade ago. It stands to reason that they would be very interested in RGIII. However there are two things that make me think they won’t really be close to acquiring St. Louis’ pick. The first reason is their leverage. Like Seattle, Kansas City and New York, Miami sits on the lower end of the top half of the draft, leaving it very little to offer beyond future first round draft picks. That position just doesn’t offer a lot of leverage for the Dolphins to use. Reason two is their new head coach, Joe Philbin. Philbin’s relationship with free agent quarterback Matt Flynn makes it far more likely that Miami will commit to Flynn than try for a rookie.

Washington is a team that makes a lot of sense in terms of being a trade partner. The Redskins have needed a quarterback for a long time and their owner Dan Snyder has always been willing to make a big move in order to build his team. While they do have other needs, the Redskins are a team that needs to address the quarterback position first and build from there. It also helps that the Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has shown the ability to draft good players later in the draft. The only snag is that the 6th overall pick may just be too low for the Rams to accept. With RGIII gone, the other players the Rams could be considering, Justin Blackmon, Matt Kalil, Morris Claiborne, etc. could all be gone by the sixth pick. It’s something the Rams will be considering if they are trying to make the trade with the Redskins.

The ideal trade partner for the Rams would be the Browns. The Browns have a pair of first round picks this year, as well as a multitude of other picks in the first three rounds acquired from the Julio Jones trade last year. The trade would also leave the Rams in a position to get almost whoever they wanted, while acquiring more picks for more quality players. However, all that being said, there is a big problem with this. Why would the Browns make this trade? Even if the Browns really like RGIII, all indications are the Rams and Vikings have no legitimate interest in him, leaving no team who would take him before the Browns at pick #4. So the Browns would end up giving up numerous picks including at least one more first round pick this year to go and get a player they could’ve gotten without making a trade at all? That just doesn’t make sense.

This is where the leverage arguments become extremely interesting. The only argument that the Rams can use to provoke the Browns into making this trade is that the Redskins have a legitimate chance at getting the pick. They also have to hope that the Browns covet RGIII enough to sell the rest of their draft for him. The Browns however, can call their bluff on this because the Browns can make a serious improvement even if they lose RGIII. The Browns have also proved very adept at trading back and still getting quality players in recent years; see the Mark Sanchez and Julio Jones trades. So it’s entirely possible the Rams could keep the second overall pick and the Browns trade back with a team like Seattle or New York for RGIII. Granted I think this is less likely with #4 pick and more likely with the #22 pick, but it’s still a possibility.

Then there’s Minnesota. All reports are that it has no real interest in RGIII, but great interest in Matt Kalil for the #3 pick. With this assumption in place, the Rams are trying to move back. But let’s say for a moment, that the Vikings decide instead to go with Justin Blackmon at #3, while the Rams are stuck at #6. Then, while Matt Kalil is available and of value, the Browns are set at left tackle and the Buccaneers are happy with their left tackle. One or both teams could try and trade back, leaving the Rams again with a complicated selection and lost potential trade partners. Should the Vikings do something very unexpected, the whole draft could be turned on its ear.

Ultimately, I think this comes down to a game of chicken between the Rams and Browns. Whether the Rams take a lesser deal to move down or the Browns give up the farm to go and get RGIII, both teams will be taking a risk. In my mind, the Browns really do have the more favorable position, because if they miss on RGIII, they can address a variety of other needs with top picks, while the Rams need to stay in contention for those picks. It also helps that the Browns have the extra picks the Rams want. Then again, I also like Colt McCoy as their starter a lot more than most, so I feel like RGIII is not someone they would go hard after either way. In the end, the Browns win whether they make a trade or not, while the Rams are almost obligated to trade the pick if they want to make serious improvements.

Thoughts from the Conference Title Game

With Super Bowl matchup set and the countdown to the final game till early August on it way, let’s take a look at what the two teams who won’t be attending the Super Bowl can take from this post-season.

San Francisco 49ers

The biggest question surrounding the Niners going into this post season was whether or not they could count on Alex Smith to be a reliable player at quarterback. They certainly found out that they could. No, Alex

Joe Flacco vs The Patriots

One of most discussed topics in the week leading up to the conferences championship games is how well Joe Flacco will play in the AFC Championship game.

Flacco has often been discounted, if not maligned for not being the dynamic passing threat that most top quarterbacks are. All in spite of the fact that Flacco has made and won playoff games every single year since being drafted. However, the last time the Ravens and the Patriots met in the playoffs, the Ravens trounced them. His less than stellar performance during that game has also been beat into the dirt.

Who would be most helped in going to the Hall of Fame with a Super Bowl Ring?

On some level it seems incredibly appropriate that the Pro Football Hall of Fame elected their new class each year the day before the Super Bowl. Given how much Super Bowl titles seem to affect Hall of Fame cases, it just feels appropriate.

Super Bowl wins have often been the difference between a player being inducted into the Hall of Fame or being left out. The 70s Steelers have eight members of their four-time Super Bowl teams in the Hall of Fame. Eleven of the 60s Packers teams that won five combined NFL championships are there as well. As time goes by, more and more of the 49ers from the 80s and the Cowboys of 90s will be inducted.

Given this relationship, it’s worth examining which players participating in this weekend’s conference championship games will have their Hall of Fame cases boosted should they be on the team that wins the Super Bowl. Now of course, there are the obvious Hall of Famers, Ed Reed, Tom Brady and Ray Lewis, but none of them need the ring to make it. It’ll certainly enhance their cases among the legends of NFL history, but it’s hardly needed for them to be accepted among the elite of all time. The players in this list, at least at this time, will need the ring to help their case if they ever wish to make it.

Thoughts from the First Two rounds of the Playoffs.

The divisional round of the playoffs has wrapped, leaving only the 49ers, Giants, Ravens and Patriots still standing. While those games are going to be good, let’s quickly look back at the teams no longer in the playoffs and see what they can take away from this post-season.

Top 10 Big-Money Free Agents

As the divisional rounds of the playoffs are in full swing, 24 teams around the NFL are considering how to build their team. They’re scouting potential draft picks, evaluating tape of their own players as well as looking at the tape of potential free agents, free agent like Ray Rice, Sione Pouha, Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson and Arian Foster.

With names like that populating the free agent market, there is going to be a fair bit of money thrown about, like there is every year. But the question isn’t just who is going to move, but how much they’re going to make. Depending on how much they make, they set the pace for the free agency market going forward.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the payers who are going to get the biggest paychecks this offseason. Just remember, these guys aren’t necessarily going to move from their current teams, but they are definitely the ones that are going to be paid the most this offseason. Also, the list is in the order of players I’m most confident will get a huge contract, not necessarily who will get paid the most. Also, the franchise tag will pay approximately the average salary of the top 5 at the position, which are the same numbers that I’m looking at when forming these contract numbers.
