Now that we have a full week of free agency pass us and some time to breathe and examine what has happened, here’s my updated Mock draft.
1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford
Nothing has been done to make this pick change.
Previous Pick: Andrew Luck
2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III – QB - Baylor
The Redskins are trying to replace their lost draft picks via free agency, getting weapons for RGIII. The only reason this pick changes is if the Colts decide they like RGIII better.
Previous Pick: Robert Griffin III
3. Minnesota Vikings – Matt Kalil – OT – USC
This is another one you can put in big boy ink.
Previous Pick: Matt Kalil
4. Cleveland Browns – Justin Blackmon – WR – Oklahoma State
Nothing the Browns have done during the offseason has made me think they wouldn’t take Blackmon with this pick. He’s the best playmaker in this draft and they need playmakers.
Previous Pick: Justin Blackmon
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Trent Richardson – RB – Alabama
With the signing of Eric Wright and Aqib Talib looking like he’ll still be in Tampa this season, the Buccaneers will likely look for the best available player. At this point it’s a coin toss between Richardson and Claiborne. I think Claibrone is the better player, but I think the Bucs would rather not be paying Eric Wright so much to be the nickel. Working with LeGarrett Blount, Richardson could be a very effective runner. (I don’t think Richardson is even close to special, but that’s just me.)
Previous Pick: Morris Claiborne
6. St. Louis Rams – Morris Claiborne – CB – LSU
With the Bucs passing on Claiborne to take Richardson, the Rams jump on the chance to add a great young corner to play opposite Cortland Finnegan.
Previous Pick: Riley Reiff
7. Jacksonville Jaguars – Melvin Ingram – DE – South Carolina
The pass rush is still an issue, so the pick stays the same.
Previous Pick: Melvin Ingram
8. Miami Dolphins – Ryan Tannehill – QB – Texas A&M
I made the pick in the previous mock based on two assumptions that have not come true. I thought that a) the Dolphins would sign Matt Flynn and that b) they would lose Paul Soliai to the Chiefs. Since, neither of these assumptions came true and with no other obvious quarterback to take the reins in Miami, I think the Dolphins will reach to take the next best prospect in the draft.
Previous Pick: Dontari Poe
9. Carolina Panthers – Quinton Coples – DE – North Carolina
While I think the Panthers need to address the offensive line, they need guards and a right tackle in case Jeff Otah continues to be injured. The fact is that no matter how good the prospect is (DeCastro would fit in perfectly)) fans just don’t like it when you use a top ten pick on a right tackle or guard. Hence, they address the defense and get the best 4-3 end on the board.
Previous Pick: Quinton Coples
10. Buffalo Bills – Riley Reiff – OT – Iowa
While another great pass rusher would be nice, the Bills need a left tackle. Following the Mario Williams signing, the Bill can address this need by getting the second best offensive tackle in the draft.
Previous Pick: Courtney Upshaw
11. Kansas City Chiefs – Dontari Poe – DT – Memphis
With Eric Winston in the fold, their right tackle spot is locked down. With Paul Soliai, who I thought was a lock to be a Chief in 2012, still in Miami; they can grab the best nose tackle in the draft.
Previous Pick: Jonathan Martin
12. Seattle Seahawks – Janoris Jenkins – CB – North Alabama
Nothing the Seahawks have done to this point in the offseason changes my mind. I think this would be a good pickup for them.
Previous Pick: Janoris Jenkins
13. Arizona Cardinals – Jonathan Martin – OT – Stanford
With the Cardinals only major signings being offensive lineman, you would think they’d be done working that area. Nope. Adam Snyder is a versatile offensive lineman who works well at guard and tackle. They also re-signed Levi Brown and he’s expected to be their right tackle this upcoming year, making Snyder likely to play guard. That leaves their left tackle spot open. Martin can slide right in and play for ten years.
Previous Pick: David DeCastro
14. Dallas Cowboys – David DeCastro – OG – Stanford
With the Cowboys picking up Brandon Carr and liking Mike Jenkins as a starter and Orlando Scandrick at the nickel, I think they’ll focus on another area of need. DeCatro is an upgrade over their current free agent signings. He might remind Jerry Jones of Larry Allen.
Previous Pick: Dre Kirkpatrick
15. Philadelphia Eagles – Michael Brockers – DT – LSU
The recent acquisition of DeMeco Ryans moves the Eagles focus from their linebacking corp. to their defensive line. The end position is fine, but they need to get some more beef at the defensive tackle spots. Brockers is a defensive tackle who bounces between the top ten picks and the rest of the first round. He would be a good addition.
Previous Pick: Luke Kuechly
16. New York Jets – Luke Kuechly – LB – Boston College
With the Jets looking to trade Bart Scott, it wouldn’t surprise me to find them grabbing the best interior linebacker in the draft if he were to fall this far.
Previous Pick: Trent Richardson
17. Cincinnati Bengals – Cordy Glenn – OT/OG – Georgia
Even though the Bengals picked up Travelle Wharton in free agency, they need another interior lineman and Glenn is the only other potential guard worth a first round pick.
Previous Pick: Cordy Glenn
18. San Diego Chargers – Courtney Upshaw – DE/OLB – Alabama
Even with the acquisitions the Chargers made in free agency, I still they would look at Michael Floyd here. But with a top quality pass rusher slipping, I think they would love the opportunity to get some consistent pass rush.
Previous Pick: Michael Floyd
19. Chicago Bears – Mark Barron – S – Alabama
Everything the Bears have done this offseason has made me more convinced they would go this route.
Previous Pick: Mark Barron
20. Tennessee Titans – Peter Konz – OC – Wisconsin
Konz would be a solid foundation to set next to Steve Hutchinson and a better long-term answer at center.
Previous Pick: Peter Konz
21. Cincinnati Bengals – Dre Kirkpatrick – CB – Alabama
The Bengals would be ecstatic to find the third best corner in the draft available here.
Previous Pick: Michael Brockers
22. Cleveland Browns – Mike Adams – OT – Ohio State
The Browns have a major need at offensive tackle as well as running back. At this point, unless Trent Richardson falls straight to this point, there is no running back worth taking, so I think they’ll grab the next bet tackle available. Fleener is still a possibility, but the need as dropped since the Browns have cut starting tackle Tony Pashos.
Previous Pick: Coby Fleener
23. Detroit Lions – Stephen Gilmore – CB – South Carolina
Since the Lions were able to re-sign both Jeff Backus and Stephen Tulloch, their major concern should be the secondary. This pick would be a reach, but at this point value is roughly equal and the need is too great to ignore.
Previous Pick: Mike Adams
24. Pittsburgh Steelers – Dont’a Hightower – LB – Alabama
I see no reason to change this pick at this time.
Previous Pick: Dont’a Hightower
25. Denver Broncos – Jerel Worthy – DT – Michigan State
The acquisition of Peyton Manning doesn’t change the problems on the defense side for the Broncos. They may consider a wide receiver here a bit more now, but should Worthy be available, they’ll need to grab him.
Previous Pick: Jerel Worthy
26. Houston Texans – Nick Perry – DE/OLB – USC
While Connor Barwin and Brooks reed filled in admirably for the now departed Mario Williams this past season, I think the Texans will want to add a third pass-rusher to keep them fresh. Perry is athletic and dynamic off the edge.
Previous Pick: Kendall Wright
27. New England Patriots – Fletcher Cox – DE/DT – Mississippi State
In spite of the signings, I still think the Patriots want to get younger along the defensive front.
Previous Pick: Fletcher Cox
28. Green Bay Packers – Andre Branch – DE/OLB – Clemson
Same thing here. Another pass rusher along the front will definitely help the defense.
Previous Pick: Andre Branch
29. Baltimore Ravens – Michael Floyd – WR – Notre Dame
While they Ravens still need an heir apparent to Ray Lewis, however Floyd offers great value here and could work excellently with Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin.
Previous Pick: Lavonte David
30. San Francisco 49ers – Kendall Wright – WR – Baylor
Even with the addition of Mario Manningham, the 49ers need a young playmaker to play the outside consistently. Wright can be that guy.
Previous Pick: Rueben Randle
31. New England Patriots – Whitney Mercilus – DE/OLB – Illinois
After grabbing a defensive lineman, the Patriots will grab an athletic pass-rusher with a high ceiling. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Patriots trade out of this spot.
Previous Pick: Stephen Gilmore
32. New York Giants – Devon Still – DT – Penn State
I’ve not seen a reason to change this pick.
Previous Pick: Devon Still
