Free agency, Day Fourteen

Well, two weeks of free agency have passed. And now were down to a few token signings a day. All the major news has been made and short of an unexpected trade, I doubt there will be a headlines being made until the draft.

Rams re-sign FB Brit Miller, sign WR Steve Smith, TE Matthew Mulligan

The Rams re-signed fullback Brit Miller to an undisclosed contract. They also signed wide receiver Steve Smith to a one-year deal and tight end Matthew Mulligan to a two-year deal.

The signing of Steve Smith (the younger from USC, not the Pro Bowler), may not be the move most Rams fans wanted to see, but it’s a nice signing. Smith didn’t work well in Philadelphia’s offensive system but still has solid speed and hands. He won’t necessarily be a major playmaker, but he’ll definitely improve passing numbers, particularly on third downs. I like this signing.

Matthew Mulligan is purely a backup and blocking tight end. Miller is a solid blocker, though he doesn’t get a lot of credit. Having him back will definitely help Steven Jackson.

Patriots sign FB Tony Fiammetta

The Patriots have signed fullback Tony Fiammetta to an undisclosed contract.

The Patriots have a need at running back and are playing mix and match to try and figure out an answer to their problem. Fiammetta is a blocker, but until the Patriots figure out who will be running behind him, or if they really want the one-dimensional Fiammetta being their starter at fullback.

Vikings sign CB Zackary Bowman

The Vikings signed cornerback Zackary Bowman to an undisclosed contract.

The Vikings need help in the defensive backfield and Bowman has proven to be a least a solid nickel back. He should provide solid depth at east for the next year while they try and figure out how to re-load the entire secondary. I generally like this move.

Cardinals re-sign LS Mike Leach, LB Reggie Walker

The Cardinals re-signed long-snapper Mike Leach to a three-year contract and linebacker Reggie Walker to a two-year deal.

I’ve made my feelings about keeping key special teams players known in earlier posts, so it should be pretty obvious how I feel about these signings. I like moves as a whole. Good decisions all around.
